Russia awards 6 Bangladeshi winners of OWAO

The Russian Embassy in Dhaka on Thursday awarded six Bangladeshi talented students, who won medals in the 1st Open World Astronomy Olympiad (OWAO) competition held in the city of Saransk, Russia, from September 26 to October 2 last year.

The OWAO competition, which was aimed at supporting astronomical education, talented schoolchildren and strengthening international academic ties, was held remotely. The exams were supervised via video-surveillance. Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantytskiy handed over the medals and crests among the winner students through a function held at the auditorium of Russian Embassy in Dhaka. The programme was supported by the Russian House in Dhaka.

A total of 10 students from different educational institutions took part in the completion and six of them won the prizes. Of them,HritomSarkerOyon of Adamjee Cantonment Public School won a ‘Silver’ while ImdadullahRaji of Notre Dame College, Ahnaf Anwar Nafi of ChttogramCollege, Radh Chowdhury of Dhaka Residential Model College, MdFijulKabirJishan of Ananda Mohan College and MdFaiyazSiddiquee of DPS STS School Dhaka won the ‘Bronze’.

The completion was held in four rounds: theoretical, practical, observational and express (test) in the competition. Computers were used for data processing and analysis. The competition was organised jointly by theMinistry of Education of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Republic of Mordovia, Ogarev Mordovia State University, Mira Educational Center and former Russian Team Leaders at the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA).

Alongside Russia and Bangladesh, students from Mordovia, Bulgaria, China, China, , Belarus, Kazakhstan, Mordovia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan many other countries took part in the competition. Russian students won the highest number of prizes, including Gold and Silver medals.

The OWAO is also planned this year (tentatively in November) in a mixed format (both in-person and remote). Bangladesh is preparing to participate again. On the occasion, Bangladesh Astronomical Association handed over a memento of goodwill to the Ambassador of Russia in Dhaka, Alexander V. Mantitsky.
